Colored Letters exhibition presents artworks embodying ornamentation and gilding
His Excellency Mohammed Al Murr, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library Foundation, in the presence of Dr Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, CEO of the Arts and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), has inaugurated the Colored Letters Exhibition organised by the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation in cooperation with the Old Bridge Gallery as part of the inaugural Dubai Calligraphy Biennale organised by Dubai Culture under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai until 31 October, presenting 19 various art exhibitions, 150+ workshops and 25+ talks across 35+ locations around Dubai.
The exhibition, curated by Pegah Behroozfar, features 23 Iranian artists who shed light on the beauty and aesthetics of calligraphy and the historical depth of this art form through a variety of artworks in different calligraphic techniques such as gilding, elongation, intertwinement, angulation, rotation, construction, overlapping and other forms of ornamentation and embellishment.
Adel Alasvand, Founder and CEO of Carnik Group, presents an artwork that reflects his passion and experience in the arts. Ahmad Mazadi is participating with a painting that reveals the flexibility and vitality of the Nastaliq script, while Ali Zandi Shafagh presents three artistic compositions that highlight his passion for design and calligraphy. Amir Hossein Jabbary's works reflect his interest in the arts and innovation, as he sought through his paintings to combine the art of calligraphy and drawing and explore the relationship between letters and shapes. Damon Khanjanzadeh has four paintings that reveal his skills in graphic design and his experience in typography and font design, and Davoud Asadolahvash’s is a collection of innovative works in which he showcases his talent and calligraphic mastery.
In her works, artist Dina Nataq Nia highlights her passion for the Kufic script and the special skills she possesses in typography and classical Sarir calligraphy. Hossein Shirazi’s graphic art reveals both deep affection and his distinctive approach, merging calligraphy and drawing to craft one-of-a-kind artistic compositions. Korosh Ghazimorad's artistic contributions demonstrate the letters' remarkable flexibility and vibrant vitality. Meanwhile, Ladan Moshir Fatemi opts for watercolours to craft paintings that eloquently convey the ebb and flow of human emotions.
The exhibition features a diverse range of artists and their unique approaches. Artist and university professor Mehdi Farimani presented a groundbreaking one-day calligraphy performance, taking the audience through the entire process from creation to display. Mahsa Davachi's artworks possess a distinctive character, emphasizing the intricate interplay between visual art and Persian calligraphy. Mahya Tolookian seamlessly blends language and art in her works, while Mohammad Bozorgi explores an architectural perspective.
Calligrapher Omid Khakbaz skillfully displays his artistry in crafting striking works using the art of beautiful writing. Raha Abdollahi's pieces stand out due to their unique ideas, vibrant colours, and the way words gracefully intertwine. Rahil Beygi, another accomplished visual artist, shares three creations that exude the essence of Thuluth script mastery.
In her artistic creations, Robabeh Hosseinpur utilized the point as a foundational unit of measurement in the line. Saeed Khooyeh's works reveal his inventive talents in design, drawing, scriptwork, and ornamentation. Mohammad Saeed Naghashian's pieces elucidate the philosophy behind the Moala script and his own innovations in various modern scripts such as Neshat, Shamsa, Janan, vertical writing, and free writing. Shahin Kazemi's creations echo the excellence of the Moala and Sarir scripts, and Solmaz Hosseini contributes three pieces showcasing contemporary calligraphy aesthetics. Meanwhile, calligrapher Vahid Arang's composition is rooted in the modernist approach to the form.
