MY EXPATRIATE BODIES | INSTALLATION ART | 2024

We experience our bodies as an expanding spectral form. In it, physical and expanding worlds touch and intertwine. Worlds with infinite openness, intersection and expansion. I understood that I can't realize myself, without changing it and being an expat in it. In every moment, our bodies change. And every time I am an expatriate in it, I rewrite it. In this work, I try to show my clear self, which took in presence and absence the best interpretation to its presence.

    EXCELLENT | DRYPOINT PRINTS | 2022

“Excellent”, revolves around academic validation and the obsessive need to constantly be the best. Here, I'm depicting my childhood self going down a damaging spiral, by combining drypoint prints alongside certificates and trophies I’ve received in my early school years. The artworks go through stages of being engulfed with golden stars representing the misconstrued ideals of my young self.

SACRED ORBITS | ORGANZA, COTTON THREADS, METAL & LED LIGHT | 2023

“Sacred Orbits” is an iteration of the series “Sacred Spaces” which is a tribute to the artist's late grandfather Mohamed Janahi and adapts his drawings to embroidery. In this version, Alwan is inspired by her grandfather's spinning top toys and creates an ethereal experience that invites people to spin the embroidered fabric - collectively embroidered by the family - to animate the shadows on the outer fabric. The ethereal movement of the shadows creates a moment where meditation and tranquility go hand in hand with playfulness.

    GHOSTLY PRESENCE | MULTIMEDIA | 2023

A project exploring the (un)official economy of tradition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It takes visitors to Addirah, where 'auction antique markets'’' emerged in the 1960s using carpets -described as '‘'Basta'’' locally- as a platform for their business. The artist addresses misconceptions about these markets and the role those merchants play in preserving tradition, inviting empathy for communities that engage differently with tradition.

ARWAH TAMMER WHEN THE SEA WATER SPEAKS | STEEL METAL, WIRE, TEXTILES, APPLIQUÉ, WEAVING | 2023

“تمر أروح/ is a sculpture that is largely inspired by the “gargoor”: traditional Emirati fishing net. The artist finds a contrast between the fragility and risk of an ancestral profession, folklore, and the passage of time, which is underlined by steel panels, and fibers. Resonating with her own practice, the artist aims to discover the interconnectedness of tactile stimulation and altering tales passed on through generations by shifting the geometrical pattern of the gargoor, and integrating symbolic repetition of weaving. Her work translated the death of her late grandfather who was a pearl diver that passed away at sea when returning from Bahrain. The name of the boat that was used for pearl diving trips that took months on end translates to “I smell dates”, which is what a fellow pearl diver said during one of those trips. The sculpture’s overarching form and rhythm ripple into a visual perception of of macrame seeks to imitate waves and the ropes used by the pearl divers, while also symbolizing the risk of sudden death when cut or not utilized correctly.

GRIEF, EVERLASTING GRIEF | THREE CANVAS FABRICS. SERIES OF FOUR PRINTS. COTTON RAG PAPERS | 2023

The artwork titled Grief, Everlasting Grief is a visual exploration of the sestina poem titled The Five Stages of Grief; a poem inspired by the Kübler-Ross model. The repetitive words in the poem represent each of the five stages of grief, and their reorganization in each stanza showcases the sense of disorder experienced in the messy process of grief. The artworks visually explore the fragmentation of such a process through various architectural elements placed in nonsensical layers and non-sequential patterns. Empty and unidentifiable spaces allow spectators to navigate their understanding of grief.

DIALOGUE WITH NATURE | ACRYLIC & THREADS ON CANVAS | 2024

This work is a direct conversation with nature, specifically the Ghaf tree, where I am seeking to symbolize the interplay and coexistence between humanity and the natural world. I am also collaborating with the natural environment, as the work was installed outdoors, and the rain added its own mark on the canvas. Each layer embodies a moment in this ongoing conversation, achieved through the process of painting and allowing the rain to gracefully wash over the canvas, fostering a dynamic interplay. It portrays the interconnectedness within the grand tapestry of nature, symbolizing the cycle of giving and receiving.
